Funds that survived the midcap carnage: Kaustubh Belapurkar

Kaustubh Belapurkar, Morningstar Investment Adviser, tells ET Now, that while largecaps should form the core of a portfolio, smallcaps would be the growth drivers which you buy and forget for the next 10, 15 years.Edited excerpts: In this mid-cap carnage, which are the funds that have stood resilient and which are the ones which are going down? We have seen a fair bit of drawdown on the midcap indices this year but over the long term, when I look at three, five-year basis, a lot of funds have stood rock solid. So, names like HDFC, DSP, L&T, Kotak, Franklin Templeton, these are the ones on top of my mind, the funds that have done extremely well during this period of time. Some of the names that I mentioned have actually stood pretty solid even in this carnage. They have been in some of the stocks that did not correct as much or actually actually appreciated during this time. So, it is important to appreciate that in the midcap index the divergence of returns is massive. While some have fallen 60% on the short period of time, someone is actually up 40% in the same timeframe.Which are the ones which are giving you that kind of stark underperformance within the funds?Banking stocks like Bank of India, Union Bank, these are some names of financials that have really depreciated over this period of time.Would you have a list of funds which are underperforming? I would not say over a short term. There are a bunch of names that have probably fallen off 15% which is in line with the index, but I would want to look at it on a long term basis. Funds will go through periods of underperformance where stocks which ran up sharply in 2017 are now down because the valuation has corrected but that does not necessarily mean that the fund has become a bad fund over the short period of time. The point about the stark underperformers and stark outperformers is interesting. It is always stock picking at the end of the day, index of course is just essentially a benchmark to judge what they are doing. So, going forward, where exactly do you think the funds in the mid and small caps spectrum, that should be poised to be able to deliver well? Should one invest in growth funds? In the midcap and small cap segment, I would park a lot of my money in funds where most of the managers are in growth style. These are stocks that are expected to grow at significant rates over the next five, ten years and that is why the managers are really betting money. It is not really too much of a value play in this segment. There could be some value plays where some negative news has really brought a stock down but largely you would see that you are looking at large growth numbers coming from these stocks. That is why managers are betting on a five, 10-year cycle on these stocks.Any themes? Some of the trends that we have seen in materials, cement stocks, paint stocks, that is happening. Consumer cyclicals, some of the auto ancillary companies or leisure companies are some of the trends that are catching up. The latest trend obviously is some of the mid-tier IT companies which have appreciated. One sees manager interest in MindTree, Cyant, a couple of other names. It is an interesting mix but growth is going to be the primary parameter when you are looking at it.But have you seen a dramatic shift in how funds are approaching small and mid-caps? Are you seeing some of the hybrid variety or multicap funds reduce their exposure drastically or are you seeing that within small and mid-caps, they are shifting from one end of the curve to maybe the other IT, pharma or whatever?A couple of things; one thing that has happened is clearly with regards to valuations. The way they had run up, managers became even more stock specific in the small and midcap space. They do have some leeway in buying largecaps. You want to pad that up with some largecap names just to provide some more liquidity in your portfolio. So, it is not a large shift but there is some shift happening there. The other thing that has happened is obviously more of a regulator forced move where SEBI has come and said that if you are a smallcap fund you need to hold at least 65% of your portfolio into smallcap stocks and ditto for midcap funds. There has been more of a shift because they have been realigning the portfolio over the last couple of quarters to get in line with the regulator mandate and move.So you have seen them becoming more pure small and midcap funds and obviously taking a much more measured approach when getting into some of these counters. In terms of sectors, IT is one of the counters where we have seen some additions on the midcap counter other than obviously the larger ones and the other parts of the market.Where have you seen money move out of? Any specific sectors or themes? So, I would say not too much money but the focus has moved away from financials, especially in this counter. This is because most of the street prefers some of the large banks and larger financial services companies, the safer guys. So, a lot of managers even in the small and midcap funds, wherever they can take some exposure they take it in the likes of Kotak Mahindra and HDFC rather than going into some of the newer names. What about large cap funds? Large cap funds certainly have been great outperformers . What is the trend you have witnessed?Largecaps are in a catch-up situation. Small and midcap indices just hit it out of the ballpark in 2017. The smallcap and midcap indices were 40-50-60% up whereas the large caps lagged behind. Hence the correction. We started the year with largecaps rallying, especially some of the technology names and few of the others. In the correction after that, there was no big fall in largecaps. The index is almost flattish and the funds have been either around the index level. Largecaps form the core part of the portfolio that is the one which should always be there. Smallcaps would be your growth driver which you buy and forget for the next 10, 15 years in your portfolio.

ONGC board gives nod to explore group restructuring options

The board of state-owned Oil and Natural Gas Corp (ONGC) has given in-principle approval for exploring options for a restructuring of the group firms including the merger of subsidiaries MRPL and HPCL. The India's largest oil and gas producer, ONGC has several subsidiaries and joint ventures including two in refining sector - Hindustan Petroleum Corp Ltd and Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Ltd and two petrochemical units - ONGC Petro additions Ltd (OPaL) and ONGC Mangalore Petrochemicals Ltd. It also has an overseas investment arm in ONGC Videsh Ltd. "The board of directors of ONGC, at the 308th meeting held on June 29, accorded its in-principle approval for exploring options for the restructuring of ONGC group companies," the company said in a regulatory filing. While ONGC did not provide details of the proposed restructuring, sources in the company said an advisor would be appointed to suggest possible options. The board of the company will take a call on the options suggested by the advisor. ONGC is looking at trimming down the structure by merging some of the subsidiaries. While MRPL operates a 15 million tonnes a year refinery at Mangalore in Karnataka, HPCL has two refineries at Mumbai and Vizag. OPaL has built at Rs 32,000 crore petrochemical complex at Dahej in Gujarat, while ONGC Tripura Power Co Ltd (OTPC) operates a 726 MW power plant at Palatana in Tripura. It also has two SEZ companies - Dahej SEZ Ltd and Mangalore SEZ Ltd. Also, it has a pipeline company in Petronet MHB Ltd and a stake in helicopter service operator, Pawan Hans Ltd as well as Petronet LNG Ltd. Sources said while there is certainly a case for merger of MRPL with HPCL for not just business synergies but also help avoid penalties from market regulator SEBI for not meeting public float requirement in case of the former. Also, some other units too can be combined. In the regulatory filing, ONGC referred to the acquisition of government's stake in HPCL earlier this year as part of government's proposal to create a public sector 'oil major' which will be able to match the performance of international and domestic private sector oil and gas companies. ONGC has in past spoken of benefits of bringing all refining business under one company. HPCL management too has supported taking over MRPL to create India's second-biggest public sector oil refining firm. "The restructuring proposal shall safeguard the overall interest of the public shareholders of all ONGC group companies," ONGC said. The restructuring, it said, would be done taking into account the need for better value creation and synergy among group firms. Also, it would be done to meet the minimum public shareholding requirement in case of MRPL. SEBI's listing rules require a minimum public float of 25 per cent. In case of MRPL, the float is less than 11.5 per cent. "The implementation of any such restructuring proposal shall be subject to the approval of the Government of India, the board of directors of the relevant companies and other stakeholders of such companies in terms of applicable laws," ONGC said.

Rlys to replace face towels with cheaper, disposable napkins

The face towels given to the passengers travelling in air-conditioned coaches will be replaced with cheaper, smaller, disposable, takeaway napkins, according to an order issued by the Railway Board.Facing flak over train delays and the services provided by the staff, the railways is now focussing on making the travel experience better for the passengers. Months after ordering all the zones to give nylon blankets to those travelling in AC coaches, the Railway Board now wants cotton-rich, non-woven face towels for them. While the cost of the face towels currently given to the passengers, including procurement cost and washing, comes to around Rs 3.53 per piece, the board, in a letter written to the general managers of all the railway zones on June 26, has said the new napkins are expected to cost less as those will be ordered in bulk and will be smaller in size. While the existing towels measure 52 cm x 40 cm, the new ones will be smaller at 40 cm x 30 cm.The cost of the bedroll is included in the ticket fare for those travelling in AC coaches."The new towels will be environment-friendly and made of cotton to absorb more water," a railway official said. Two such napkins per bedroll will be provided during long journeys, if required.

The best Samsung Galaxy Tab A deals in July 2018

Prices for the Samsung Galaxy Tab A deals tend to drop nicely around this time of year. So if you're looking for the best place to buy one, we've rounded up a collection of prices from multiple retailers to make shopping around super simple for one of the most reasonably priced Android tablets on the market.

Unlike many other cheap tablets that flood search engines at this time of year, the Samsung Galaxy Tab A range is one we can fully recommend as one of the finest budget tablets around as the performance and quality puts similar tablets to shame. Many other big name manufactures have seemingly abandoned tablets nowadays thanks to smartphones muscling in on their territory so it's great to see Samsung still proudly flying the Android tablet flag.

Tablets may not be as popular as they once were, but we still enjoy the larger screens for casual web browsing, gaming or catching up on a bit of Netflix. The Samsung Galaxy Tab A tablets sit nicely in the middle between the much more expensive iPad 'deals', or the cheap Amazon Fire tablet deals, with the latter not supporting apps from the Google Play Store. So let us show you the best prices for both the 7-inch and 10.1-inch Samsung Galaxy Tab A deals.

Seven inch tablets are the ideal size for most people, offering a screen bigger than smartphones (although some are getting close to this size now!) but still being comfortable to hold in one hand while reading or watching video. The nonslip backing ensures it won't be sliding out of your hand either.

The Galaxy Tab A is also a great size tablet to take with you out of the house on your commute or on your hols. And with a battery that lasts up to 11 hours between charges, you'll be doing just that as much as you want and be able to leave the charger at home if you're only out for a day or two.

If you fancy a larger version of the Samsung Galaxy Tab A, check out the latest prices for the 10.1-inch version below. If you're planning on watching more video content, then this could be the one for you as the bigger screen is great for films and TV shows.

It's not just a bigger tablet though, the screen resolution is improved over the smaller version and you're getting 2GB of RAM instead of 1.5GB which should make multi-tasking and overall performance a bit smoother for the more demanding apps and games out there.

The best cheap MacBook Pro deals in July 2018

Welcome to the home of the best cheap MacBook Pro deals. Here at TechRadar, we check around for the cheapest MacBook Pro prices everyday at the top retailers on the net. So you're certainly in the right place to save money on your new Apple laptop. Better yet, we've just updated our guide with the latest models. We've still included the earlier models, as some of them are a lot cheaper.

The MacBook Pro has become the go to laptop range for professionals and enthusiasts alike, absolutely powering through tasks regular laptops fear. Apple's staggering lineup of Retina screens lead the way for crisp visuals and the increasingly excellent physical design of the laptops themselves has seen the latest Macbook Pro usurp the svelte form of the MacBook Air. You want the best there is, but there's no reason to pay more than you should for it. If you want to save some money you could check out the other MacBook deals or maybe even a cheap laptop deal.

2016 was crying out for a refresh of the MacBook Pro and Apple once again come up with something rather special. In addition to the internal spec getting a long awaited upgrade and that gorgeous Retina display (available in 13-inch and 15-inch flavours), Apple has introduced their long-rumoured Touch Bar technology. This mini-LED display replaces the Function keys and comes up with different touch display controls for an increasing number of programs. Uses so far include Safari bookmarks, predictive text, search field, emojis, photo galleries or even more intensive actions like photo editing or mixing records. Simple, yet innovative. Expect rival firms to start copying it soon.

Macbook Pro with Touch Bar (2017) deals

2017 update: The 2017 lineup has recently been released too. The newer models aren't a massive upgrade over the 2016 lineup. Actually the -admittedly still excellent- retina display and overall size are the same. If you're looking for increased performance, you're in luck as the new models have been upgraded to include the 7th-gen Kaby Lake processor chips for enhanced 4K streaming and media editing.

The new 2017 MacBook Pros will eventually phase out the older models, which means you'll more than likely be able to snag a cheap MacBook Pro deal on the older laptops.

This new 13-inch MacBook Pro is the cheapest way to get your hands on one of Apple's latest laptops, released in late 2016. This is the lightest MacBook Pro ever made, but still packs an incredible punch with 2.0GHz dual-core Intel Core i5 or 2.4GHz dual-core Intel Core i7 processor options. You don't get the new Touch Bar on this version, but you do get a Retina display and the new larger trackpad. Prices start around $1,499/£1,449/AU$2,199. Stay updated on the latest prices in the comparison chart below.

MacBook Pro 13-inch - no Touch Bar (2017)

2017 update: Just like the aforementioned Touch Bar models, the screen and shape are unchanged since the 2016 models. You are getting the new Kaby Lake 7th-gen processor though.

2016's lineup was very expensive, which is why we're delighted to see that Apple has released an even cheaper 13-inch model for an entry-level, but still very modern, MacBook Pro experience. This does come at the cost of a smaller storage capacity though, with the cheapest options including a 128GB SSD instead of 256GB.

These new 2017 models will start to phase out some of the older ones, so keep an eye on our comparison charts as we expect to see some tasty discounts on the 2016 crew as retailers make way for the new breed.

The 2015 MacBook Pro didn't undergo a dramatic reimagining, but then there wasn't anything particularly wrong with it in the first place. Improvements to its performance mean it's better value than before, and the noticeably improved battery life makes it even more of a mobile workhorse. As ever the cost of adding memory and storage soon sends the price tag into orbit, but even the stock MacBook Pro is an incredibly versatile computer and arguably Apple's best ever laptop. Newer MacBooks may be more portable, but the Pro has all the power.

If you're looking for the larger-sized laptop experience in the MacBook range, you'll be wanting to take a look at the seriously impressive specs of the 2015 model 15-inch MacBook Pro with Retina display. The Intel Core i7 2.5 Ghz processor combined with 16GB of RAM will make light work of anything you can throw at it. 512GB of super fast flash storage, a new Force Touch trackpad and that incredible four million pixel-packing display make this one of the best laptops in the business.

There's plenty to like on the 13-inch MacBook Pro with Retina display: from the still-impressive display to its excellent build quality, great keyboard and good (but not excellent) battery life. It may not be as portable as the MacBook Air, but it's far from cumbersome and its top notch build quality means you won't be worried about its welfare when carrying it around.

The best iPad Pro deals in July 2018

The iPad Pro sits at the very top of Apple's iPad range - above the iPad mini and iPad Air series. This page lists all of the best iPad Pro deals currently available from online retailers in your area.

If you're looking for a different cheap iPad, check out our iPad deals page which lists the best deals on every model of iPad. If you'd prefer the Apple experience with a laptop, you'll want to rake a look at our best MacBook deals page.

The iPad Pro is a truly stunning tablet which now comes in three sizes. The original lineup includes 12.9-inch and 9.7-inch models. While the most recent 2017 models include 12.9-inch too, alongside the new 10.9-inch version.

If you're after the very best tablet on the planet at the best price possible, see the iPad Pro deals below! Amazon Prime Day is just around the corner, but iPads don't usually feature, so if you spot a bargain at this time of year elsewhere, you should dive in.

iPad Pro (2017) deals

Instead of naming the newest iPad Pro, the iPad Pro 2, Apple continue the irritating trend of giving the latest version the same name as the last one. Obviously this can make it difficult to pick out the new from the old sometimes, but we're here to help.

First of all the 10.5-inch iPad Pro is a new size, as the previous smaller model was 9.7-inches. There is once again a 12.9-inch model though. How do you tell the difference between the new and old iPad Pro models? Your safest bet is to double check the internal spec and look out for one key difference, the new iPad Pros use an A10X processor chip, and the older ones sport the A9X. So if you want the latest version, look out for that A10X.

So, that's a faster processor to give it the edge over the older iPad Pro, you're also getting a modest upgrade to the rear camera, with the biggest megapixel boost being given to the front camera, which now provides a much clearer FaceTime experience.

Both new models are available in 64GB, 256GB and 512GB sizes. You'll also need to consider if you want a standard iPad Pro to only use Wi-Fi for online activities, or to opt for a cellular route and tie it too a data-only SIM only deal. Be warned though, cellular models are even more expensive.

The screen itself benefits from smaller bezels and a small boost in resolution, for the best iPad screen yet. There's no two ways about it though, the changes aren't exactly earth shattering and if they're not going to make much difference for you, we'd advise taking a look further down this page as we've listed the best prices available for the older iPad Pro models, where you might be able to make a significant saving over these new iPad Pro deals.

iPad Pro deals

iPad Pro 12.9 deals

The original iPad Pro is a tablet titan

At launch, the original iPad Pro was one of the most impressive tablets on the planet. At 12.9-inches from corner to corner it's the biggest iPad ever with the most powerful internal components ever seen in a dedicated touchscreen tablet. The iPad Pro is available in multiple configurations. The standard WiFi version is available in 32GB, 128GB and 256GB models, while the 4G version comes in 128GB and 256GB versions. Prices start from $799 in the US, £729 in the UK and $1,149 in Australia but of course, as retailers compete for your money, you should never pay these prices! Here are the best iPad Pro deals currently available.

iPad Pro deals

iPad Pro 9.7 deals

The new 9.7-inch iPad Pro is effectively an iPad Air 3

Available from March 31, the iPad Pro 9.7 is Apple's new flagship 'standard' iPad. It was announced on March 21 and hits the shelves instead of an iPad Air 3. As well as having a smaller screen, the iPad Pro 9.7 is also 8mm thinner than the iPad Pro 12.9, weighs 276g less and has exactly the same Apple A9X chip inside. The camera is actually better in the 9.7-inch model, and can do 4K video recording at 30fps. The iPad Pro 9.7 is available in WiFi-only and 4G configurations of 32GB, 128GB and 256GB while prices start from $599 in the US, £499 in the UK and $849 in Australia. As always, you should be able to find a better deal than that!

This incredibly big tablet is also incredibly good

If you're looking for a super-sized tablet your options are fairly limited, yet Samsung offers up two with the Samsung Galaxy Tab Pro 12.2 being joined by the incredibly similar Note Pro 12.2. The battery life on the Galaxy Tab Pro 12.2 is rather impressive. With light to medium use you should be able to get two days usage from one charge, which is a massive plus for those on the move who do not necessarily have access to a power point throughout their working day.

It's a few years old now but good at the right price

The best iPad mini deals in July 2018

The iPad mini is almost flawless in so many ways and we've picked out all the best iPad mini deals so you can find a cheap one. It's getting on a bit now and it's been a while since Apple released a new version but at least prices on the various models are falling a bit.

The design of the iPad mini is still the best in the tablet category, with no Android tablet really coming close in this class. The fast processor and premium design makes it a great looking tablet, too, and the Retina display on the iPad mini 2 and 3 is simply stunning.

On top of that, iOS 8 is an excellent OS and even gaming is sensational on this tablet. In short, it's the best 7-inch tablet out there. So here are all the best iPad mini deals so you can grab one at the best possible price.

Best iPad mini, iPad mini 2, iPad mini 3 and iPad mini 4 deals...

iPad mini 4

iPad mini 4 deals

The best 7-inch tablet ever made

One of the major changes with the iPad mini 4 over last year's mini 3 is its design. It may look the same, but it's been slimmed down from 7.5mm to a wafer thin 6.1mm. It's also now more powerful, has a stunning screen and the battery is still a 10-hour beast. The A8 processor is a good step up from the A7 inside the mini 3 so if you're going to play 3D games or throw around some of the more hefty iPad apps from the App Store, this is certainly your best option.

ipad deals

iPad mini 3 deals

Last year's iPad mini is still a fantastic tablet

Last year's best iPad mini is, despite the launch of the iPad mini 4, still an amazing tablet and there are some great deals on this to be had, too. The 7.9-inch screen is the perfect size in our opinion - you can hold it in one hand but it's still big enough to be satisfying when you watch videos or browse the web. Here's every cheap iPad mini 3 deal you could ever want, and then some...

ipad mini 2 deals

iPad mini 2 deals

The first iPad mini with Retina display is a deal-tastic marvel
